  En 1871, James Clerk Maxwell retó la intuición de sus colegas: ¿y si un ser microscópico pudiera abrir y cerrar una puerta entre dos cámaras de gas, dejando pasar solo moléculas rápidas a un lado y lentas al otro? Al acumular moléculas energéticas en una cámara, parecería obtenerse un gradiente de temperatura sin aportar trabajo externo, lo cual amenazaba la segunda ley de la termodinámica:

  🧭 Procesos clave en T-s (y cómo reconocerlos)

  1. Procesos isentrópicos (sin cambio de entropía):

  • Son líneas verticales.

  🔎 Ejes y unidades: ¿qué rayos significa cada punto?

  Un diagrama P‑V (presión-volumen) muestra cómo cambia la presión \(P\) y el volumen \(V\) de una sustancia mientras realiza trabajo.

  • Eje vertical (P): presión, generalmente en Pascales (Pa) o bares.  
  • Eje horizontal (V): volumen, usualmente en metros cúbicos (m³) o litros (L).

  Cada puntito en el gráfico representa un estado específico del gas: como tomarle una foto instantánea a un motor en plena faena.

  🎢 Curvas de compresión y expansión: ¿qué está pasando ahí?

  En general, tendrás dos tipos principales de curvas:

  • Expansión: el gas aumenta de volumen y suele bajar de presión.

  Estas curvas pueden ser:

  Cuando estudias motores térmicos, siempre sale esto:

  • Otto: calor a volumen constante.
  • Diesel: calor a presión constante.

  Pero espera… en un motor Diesel, ¿no se mueve el pistón mientras se quema el combustible? ¿Cómo puede entonces mantenerse constante la presión?

  2. Repaso rápido del Diesel teórico 🚗💨

  Recordemos rápido las etapas del ciclo Diesel ideal:

  3. La magia detrás de la presión constante 🧙‍♂️

  La clave es la ley del gas ideal:

  En la etapa 2→3:

  • Se inyecta combustible, el gas se calienta → \( T \uparrow \)
  • El pistón baja simultáneamente → \( V \uparrow \)

  Si el aumento en volumen \( V \) compensa exactamente el aumento de temperatura \( T \), la presión \( P \) permanece aproximadamente constante:

  \[ P = \frac{n R T}{V} \quad \text{(se mantiene constante)} \]

  En el motor real, la presión no es perfectamente plana, pero esta simplificación refleja bien la realidad.

  4. ¿Por qué en el Otto no pasa esto? 💥

  El ciclo Otto es el modelo idealizado de los motores de encendido por chispa (gasolina). Consta de cuatro tiempos mecánicos que—cuando se representan en un diagrama \(P\!-\!V\)— forman cuatro procesos termodinámicos:

  Antes de arrancar, tres conceptos clave:

  Motores reales pierden energía por rozamiento, transferencia de calor y combustión no instantánea, pero el ciclo ideal nos da la “nota alta” teórica. 🎺

  2.1 Compresión adiabática 1→2

  1. Calor, trabajo y la Segunda Ley (versión exprés)  

  Antes del banquete termodinámico, un entremés:  

  • Trabajo \(W\) es energía transferida cuando fuerza y desplazamiento colaboran.  
  • Calor \(Q\) es energía que fluye debido a una diferencia de temperatura.  
  • Segunda Ley: no existe proceso cíclico que convierta todo el calor absorbido en trabajo. Siempre hay “desperdicio” que termina como calor expulsado.  

  Dato curioso 🚗: El motor de tu coche promedio convierte solo ~30 % de la energía química del combustible en movimiento útil. El resto es calor perdido… ¡como los tambores de una banda de cumbia calentando la pista!

  Imagina un gas ideal confinado en un cilindro con émbolo. El ciclo completo tiene cuatro etapas reversibles:
