Imagine two Americans.

One wants to build a company worth a billion dollars.

The other wants to paint landscapes, repair old radios, play in a band, raise children, study insects, or write novels that may never sell particularly well.

There is no obvious reason that a healthy society should require either person to adopt the other's definition of a successful life. Nor is there an obvious reason that the first person becoming extraordinarily wealthy requires the second person to face homelessness if things go badly.

That suggests a political bargain that does not fit especially neatly into the usual American argument between capitalism and the welfare state:

Guarantee the floor. Leave the ceiling open.

Under such a system, every citizen would have some basic assurance of healthcare, housing, food, and enough income to remain an active participant in society. Losing a job would still hurt. A failed business could still wipe out savings. Choosing an economically unproductive life would still mean having less money than someone who spent twenty years building a successful company.

But illness, unemployment, or failure would no longer carry the threat of material catastrophe.

At the other end of the distribution, there would be no predetermined maximum fortune. If somebody builds something that millions of people willingly pay for and becomes fantastically wealthy, good for them.

We could even admire them.

There is a peculiar feature of ordinary working life that becomes harder to ignore once you notice it. You may like your job, respect your coworkers, and work for an employer who treats you well. You may even find the daily work genuinely meaningful. Yet, if your paycheck stopped arriving for a prolonged period, the rest of your life would eventually begin coming apart. Rent or mortgage payments would still arrive, alongside grocery bills, utility notices, insurance premiums, and medical expenses. The complex machinery of daily life keeps running regardless of whether your income does.

This reality introduces an uncomfortable question: how free can work really be when refusing to work ultimately threatens your ability to live? This is not to suggest that traditional employment is inherently exploitative or that every salaried worker is secretly miserable. Plenty of people thrive within organizations, benefiting from the community, stability, purpose, and scale that are difficult to replicate on one’s own. The core issue is not employment itself, but economic dependence. If your entire livelihood relies on continuously exchanging today’s labor for today’s income, then no matter how pleasant the arrangement may be, your baseline survival remains tied to someone else’s willingness to keep paying for your time.

For centuries, people have proposed different ways of escaping that fundamental vulnerability. One approach is political: strengthening collective bargaining power to secure better working conditions. Another is philosophical: practicing frugality and deliberately reducing material needs so that less money is required to live well. A third is the modern financial-independence movement, which encourages earning a high salary, saving aggressively, and investing the surplus into market indexes until compound returns can support your lifestyle.

Spend enough time reading about startups and it's easy to come away with the impression that success means conquering the world.

Millions of users. Billion-dollar valuations. Products everyone has heard of.

Those stories are fascinating, but they also distort our intuition.

Imagine you build an online service that people find genuinely useful. Not revolutionary. Not something that dominates headlines. Just something that solves a real problem well enough that people are happy to pay $8 per month.

Now imagine that 10,000 people subscribe.

That's:

before expenses.

Those numbers aren't remarkable.

The surprising part is how few people they represent.

With a world population of roughly 8.2 billion, 10,000 customers amount to about

of humanity.

That is about one person out of every 820,000.

Think about that for a moment.

The internet often feels crowded because we can see everyone at once. Social media places millions of people in the same feed, making it seem as though our work must compete with all of them.

In reality, very few businesses are trying to serve everyone.

The most resilient ones often serve a particular group extraordinarily well.

Maybe they're musicians who need better notation software.

Maybe they're birdwatchers.

Maybe they're language learners.
