O sorteador me enviou a um condado onde minha primeira interpretação estava errada tantas vezes que isso acabou se tornando a própria história.
O Condado de Musselshell, em Montana, visto inicialmente pelo Street View, parecia um ensaio sobre a ausência.
Uma estrada de cascalho segue em direção ao horizonte quase sem ninguém à vista. Campos amarronzados se estendem sob um céu imenso. Postes avançam em fila até serem engolidos pela perspectiva. Em Roundup, uma antiga escola de arenito que parecia cheia de vida em 2011 aparece com as janelas tapadas catorze anos depois. Mais adiante, a alegre placa de um antigo café desaparece entre uma visita do Street View e outra.
Seria muito fácil organizar essas imagens em uma narrativa conhecida sobre o esvaziamento gradual do interior dos Estados Unidos.
Então comecei a conferir os fatos.
Segundo o Escritório do Censo dos Estados Unidos, o Condado de Musselshell não está encolhendo. Sua população era de 4.730 habitantes no censo de 2020 e foi estimada em 5.582 em 2025, um aumento de quase 18%. Cerca de um em cada cinco moradores tem menos de 18 anos.
E a escola fechada esconde uma surpresa ainda maior.
Talvez, então, a pergunta interessante aqui não seja: O que deu errado no Condado de Musselshell?
É outra: Quanto podemos realmente saber a partir de uma fotografia?
Relativity took away the master clock.
Before Einstein, it was natural to imagine time as an invisible current flowing uniformly through the universe. Clocks might run badly, people might lose track of the hour, and trains might fail to respect the timetable, but beneath these local disappointments there was supposedly one true time. If two events happened simultaneously, they happened simultaneously for everyone.
Relativity tells us otherwise. Observers moving relative to one another can disagree about which distant events happened at the same time. Clocks following different paths through spacetime can accumulate different durations. Gravity changes the rate at which clocks tick. There is no clock mounted somewhere above the universe, safely outside the proceedings, displaying the correct cosmic hour.
And then cosmologists say that the universe is about 13.8 billion years old.
This sounds suspiciously like the master clock has been smuggled back into the building.
Whose 13.8 billion years are these? A clock on Earth? A clock drifting between galaxies? A clock moving at nearly the speed of light? There is no inertial reference frame for the entire expanding universe, so where does this age have any truth?
The short answer is that the age of the universe is not the reading on an arbitrary observer's clock. It is an amount of cosmic time: the proper time measured by an ideal family of observers who move with the average expansion of the universe.
Imagine two Americans.
One wants to build a company worth a billion dollars.
The other wants to paint landscapes, repair old radios, play in a band, raise children, study insects, or write novels that may never sell particularly well.
There is no obvious reason that a healthy society should require either person to adopt the other's definition of a successful life. Nor is there an obvious reason that the first person becoming extraordinarily wealthy requires the second person to face homelessness if things go badly.
That suggests a political bargain that does not fit especially neatly into the usual American argument between capitalism and the welfare state:
Guarantee the floor. Leave the ceiling open.
Under such a system, every citizen would have some basic assurance of healthcare, housing, food, and enough income to remain an active participant in society. Losing a job would still hurt. A failed business could still wipe out savings. Choosing an economically unproductive life would still mean having less money than someone who spent twenty years building a successful company.
But illness, unemployment, or failure would no longer carry the threat of material catastrophe.
At the other end of the distribution, there would be no predetermined maximum fortune. If somebody builds something that millions of people willingly pay for and becomes fantastically wealthy, good for them.
We could even admire them.
Dust conditions were terrible yesterday, but the violet break opened up around sunset.
We almost packed it in. The forecast had promised long, clean curls off the western ridge, but most of the afternoon was just loose particulate blowing everywhere and collapsing before it could form anything worth riding.
Then, around six, the whole thing changed.
A pressure front came through from the nebula and pulled the dust into these enormous slow-moving tubes, lavender at the edges and almost black underneath. You could see stars through the thinner parts.
We stayed out until it got dark.
The van is holding up surprisingly well. One of the stabilizers makes a horrible noise whenever we park on anything steeper than about twelve degrees, but otherwise she's been perfect. There's a little shelf of rock here where everyone camps between sessions. Somebody left three chairs and a fire ring, so we've basically moved in.
I still don't understand how the fire works.
Nobody else seems concerned about this.
Tomorrow we're heading farther down the coast. Apparently there's a break about four hundred kilometers south where the dust comes off an old supernova remnant and glows pale blue when you carve through it. A guy at camp says it's the best ride in the system.
He also said that about this place.
Anyway, we're sunburned somehow, the boards are filthy, and there is cosmic dust in absolutely everything.
