- A base hit is when a batter hits the ball into fair territory and makes it to at least first base without the benefit of an error or a fielder’s choice
- A fielder’s choice occurs when an offensive player reaches a base without active opposition from the defense. One common example of fielder’s choice is when a batter reaches first base because the fielders are trying to put out a runner on another base.
- Total bases is the number of bases a player has gained with hits
- Does not include bases on balls, bases gained from subsequent batters’ hits, or any base not gained directly from hitting the ball
