Advice for sportswriters, particularly during off-season
With few exceptions, the article that draws in readers begins as the idea a writer cares most about. Editors may be drawn to coverage of the highest-profile or most sensational topics, on the expectation that it would attract the most views.
However, this perspective could quell creative and unexpected ideas, ones that might have less of an opportunity during the regular season when new events, surprises, and fodder for commentary are so rich that there is little time to step back and take the more reflective route.
